Milpitas Family Literacy Project

“The single most important activity for building school success appears

to be reading aloud to children.”

La actividad más importante para tener éxito escolar parece

ser leer en voz alto a los niños.”

Milpitas Family Literacy Project

Milpitas Family Literacy meets weekly to help parents become effective reading partners with their children. During each class, Linda Lambert models book handling skills and reading aloud while parents observe.  Students who attend exchange book bags containing four books. Families use the books to apply what they learned to help their children begin to appreciate reading. Sharing books as a family, not only enhances the toddler's chances of success upon entering elementary school, it also creates an opportunity for family bonding through daily "book cuddling."  See below for information about program times and locations.

Here is what one parent wrote...

"This program has helped my son tremendously. He has developed the skills of listening, memorizing, predicting and creating his own story, building new vocabularies and starting to sound out 3-4 letter words.  Most importantly, the program instills the joy of reading for my son.  As a parent, I have learned that reading is so essential to our kids' success."

MUSD kindergarten teachers stated...

"As the program's first enrollees began entering kindergarten, our entrance exam scores for kindergarten reflected a noticeable increase on the Concepts About Print (CAP) test, which is a significant indicator of future reading success." ...

"After providing [Linda Lambert ] a checklist of items we test for on the CAP exam, our initial benchmarks continued to grow from year to year."

"In addition to reading readiness, we have also found improvements on our Title I math exam scores in the areas of counting, naming colors, and identifying shapes.  We wholeheartedly support the Milpitas Family Literacy program ..."
